This came up in another thread, but I wanted to dig a little deeper and see what the great minds of VS.com think about this issue.
This is hypothetical as most of us agree that Mason is getting year 3 unless he gets blown out in every remaining game.
Scenario 1: Mason gets canned and we have to hire a new coach. If our goal is to go to bowl games in most seasons, my impression is that we are going to have to pay on par with our SEC competition. You can't be 14 out of 14 in tradition, 14 out of 14 in facilities and 14 out of 14 in what you pay your coach and expect anything other than being 14 out of 14 in on the field results.
According to the Tennessean on October 8th, it appears that $4,000,000 is about the lowest any of the SEC coaches make, with 7/9 making closer to $5,000,000 per year.

My take is that we can't be 14 out of 14 in this particular category. I think we need to be at least in the middle of the SEC in terms of what we pay our coach. I threw out there a $5,000,000 a year offer, thinking that would attract a quality head coach.
Thoughts?
Scenario 2: Mason wins a few more games this year and takes us to a bowl game in 2016. What do we need to bump his salary to?
I think he needs to be fairly compensated and my guess is he needs to be in the high 3's or low 4's with bonuses taking him at or over $5,000,000 per year.
Thoughts?
Keep in mind that the money we get from the SEC annually is around $30,000,000, so we will have every penny we need to make this happen.
