Why does his fastball keep working?
Said he doesn’t want to get into the metrics but he’s got some riding life
It’s hard to lay off a fastball
He uses the metrics to his advantage and works it off his other pitches
It’s important to mix pitches for that reason if they’re not working
Does it feel different this week playing Tennessee?
They take it all one day at a time
Their season was taken away a year ago
How fun has it been to go up against other teams and take their best shots?
It’s fun to be playing again
Said they have a culture and expectation from Day One that’s set for them
Said Corbin knows they’re still kids and that spending time in the locker room with teammates is a big part of the fun there
How would he describe the culture at VU to an outsider?
Said it’s hard to put into words
It’s a special place
You feel it from the moment the staff first contacts you but you don’t really understand it until you get there
Said part of it is the involvement of their pro players and how they’re still around
Said the feeling gets stronger of how special it is once you’re around
But said they’re not experienced the end-of the-season homestretch in his class or the freshman class
Asked about last weekend
Said it’s a really good Georgia team and they want to play good teams
That was a test where they came up short
Said even coming into the weekend they knew they had to get better
What matters is where they are at season’s end
Year 1 to 2, where did he grow the most?
He’s always got a growth mindset
He listens to the coaches and their wisdom
The culture inside the program helps you get better with the other players too; they share knowledge and experience
Asked about growing up in a family of pitchers and his dad being fine with him being a position player, did he want to play another position and when did he know pitching was the right route
Said 7th-8th grade, he was still small but he had a good arm
“It was always ‘He has a good arm for his size.’”
But he was behind others and he was never the go-to pitcher, so, he worked hard as a hitter
Thought he might be a second baseman
But he continued to work on mechanics
Did he enjoy working with his dad, or did his dad back off?
Said any kid questions his parents; at 12-13 he’d argue with his dad about it
Everything he’s learned has come from him
Mechanically he’s made a lot of strides; much different from 12-13 and his dad’s the reason for that.
How’s he like being a Leiter?
He likes it
Mentioned his uncle and cousin (both named Mark); said they text him a lot after his starts and give him feedback
Asked about “being present” and “living in the moment”
Said he’s someone who’s always been able to stay in the present
Said you have to appreciate each moment and realize it can all be taken away at any time
But you have to stay in the process and enjoy that process
Lindsey Nelson Legends, asked about handling that and the road
Said going on the road reveals a lot in terms fo relationships and how you handle that
Said they experienced that some at Oklahoma State and LSU
Said Corbin tells you when you go on the road, it’s you against everyone
So they stay together and focus on just them and don’t get involved with what’s going on around them
What’s he liked about the SEC
You have to be on top of your game
If you make a mistake, you’ll pay
And he likes that challenge, it keeps you on your toes
