Asked about Elon
It’s a different challenge, they’re a good team
They’ll have a chip on their shoulder and connected
You’ll get the full force of effort from them
Their focus needs to be playing on their highest level as a team
They saw some of that Saturday
They love they had a good result Saturday but that wasn’t the focus
Winning is hard, winning consistently was harder
On flipping the page from Hawaii and turning the page
They’re experiencing the same thing in reverse
It’s time to readjust and it’s challenging
Was happy for team/program/university and how they represented, they feel it’s how the program should be represented
When you win you should celebrate appropriately
They spent a lot of time guarding against this but saying and doing are two different things
Lack of result and produce adversity
The negative echo chamber can be hard to overcome and they spend time insulating from that, so they have to work it from the other end now
It’s about sustaining winning over time, this is the beginning of a journey for them and Saturday is meaningless unless they can build on that
Updates on Hernandez, Ketschek and Smith
They aren’t available to play this weekend, they’re looking forward to getting them back
Anybody else not available?
Said he wouldn’t add anything to that.
Asked about Truedell Berry
Not available this weekend, he’s week to week
Where does he want to see them improve?
They want to have a confrontational attitude on the field and play 11 as 1; sometimes they did all that last weekend but they lapsed there early and especially in 11 as 1
They can’t have guys out of position
When your margin for error is small you have to be committed to design; Hawaii found some soft spaces early and a structural breakdown led to the TD run
They had a bad return decision on the KO they took and then took bad offensive penalties
They can’t overcome those self-inflicted wounds
When they put pressure on an opponent they need to be able to not let them escape
Some aspects of their prep were “solid in foundation” and hopefully they’ll all show up again.
Their ability to adjust/adapt/fill gaps are part of the reality ahead
Updates on Davis/Lee/Bapst
No updates
All are progressing but week to week
Said Lee and Bapst might be sooner to get back
Asked about 13th game vs. bye week and also playing the week after Hawaii
Said he inherited the schedule and is just trying to navigate it
Said they want to play in a 13th game, which is a bowl
Said the schedule is set so far in advance he doesn’t have much control
But said having two points to regroup will be healthy for their program, especially with the youth on their team and taking on the challenge of college football
Playing two road games against Group of Five teams
Said they just don’t care
At Notre Dame, they were independent, they got their schedule and went with it. There were a couple of consistencies but they just dealt with it
That’s their mentality here
They want a competitive mindset here and that includes not putting energy to things they can’t control
They put energy to how they represent the school and how they play
Could a lot of freshmen play? How’s that affected by the four-game limit?
They’ll do whatever it takes to win each game
Whatever combo of people that is on Saturday, that’s what’s on the field
Bigger conversations around four games and particular players—they’ve already plotted a course they plan to go but that can change based on where they need to adjust.
That’ll show up in the depth chart
For the majority of players, they’ll get in four games and they’ll plug and play
If they’re not ready
Asked about Quincy Skinner
Said it’s a soft tissue issue and he expects him to play
Wanted to praise strength and conditioning and training staff, especially as warm as it was he was pleased they didn’t cramp up there.
Yilanan Outtara
He’s week to week and will be back
Won’t play this weekend
They’ll see him probably next week
He’s still got to show he can impact winning and that affects availability
They have a high opinion of him, he flashed at times in camp
