In almost every facet of the game, I do think the coaching and the play is actually better. But, man, are we lacking on talent. It's true, we just don't have the talent. Great kids and students I'm sure, but something is severely amiss.
I'm puzzled and not sure why there has been such a talent regression in the matter of a year or two, unless Franklin really did coach them up to such an extent. If you look at the offensive side of the ball, we remind me much more of the Damian Allen-era teams (when I was at VU) than pretty much anything since. Not once when we had the ball did we really look like we were going to do a thing with it.
Defensively, the Mason's gameplan and scheming actually seemed to cover our talent gaps. There was virtually no pass rush, edge pressure and our stops seemed to be more about players executing their assignments vs. game-changing athletic skill. Yes, the plays were made and executing properly is not a layup by any means. Certainly the defensive unit looks to have a far different ceiling from the offense, but I still don't see gamebreaking players.
The program has severely regressed and it's a shame because we tasted what it COULD be like -- so now it is actually painful.
Haven't posted in a while and been lurking... so thanks for bearing with me
