Chris made a comment on the podcast in the last couple of weeks about assistant coach experience. I was intrigued and looked up the numbers for this weeks matchup.
Vanderbilts assistant coaching staff has 15 years of P5 coordinator or position coach experience before joining Clark Lea’s staff.
Lustig - 4 yrs - Syracuse
Howell - 6 yrs UVA
Blazek - 3 yrs, Rutgers
Haye - 2 yrs, Vanderbilt
Floridas staff has 52 years of P5 coordinator or position coach experience and another 3 years of NFL position coach experience before joining Napier at Florida.
Sale - 3 yrs, UGA, Az St, NYG
Spencer - 3 yrs Vandy, 6 yrs PennSt, 2 yrs NYG
Juluke- 1 yr LSU, 1 yr TxTech
Raymond - 1 yr Nebraska, 10 yrs LSU
Bateman- 3 yrs, UNC
Gonzales - 5 yrs UF, 2 yrs LSU, 1 yr Illini, 5 yrs MsSt, 4 yrs UF = 19 yrs
Peterson - 6 yrs SoCar
They also have John Donovan as an offensive analyst with all P5 or NFL experience since joining the Maryland staff as a coach in 2005. Vanderbilt does not have any analyst with P5 experience from what I can tell.
It’s definitely a big difference in experience but not at the coordinator spots. Florida’s DC had no P5 experience before joining this staff, and Howell has more P5 experience than Florida’s OC. The majority of Florida’s experience comes from just the DL and WR coach, but they have more coaches with P5 experience in general, too.
If there is turnover, maybe look at analysts on some of these big programs. Would Donovan be a step up over Lynch? Pat Shurmur is an analyst for Coach Prime this season. Do guys like that just have no interest in coaching vs being an analyst?
