Hey all!! Here is the second installment of the new "VandyBoys in the Pros Weekly Update" series. I appreciate all the feedback and encouragement I received last week. Unlike last week, I have tried to incorporate the use of Twitter into this series. This series will run on Monday's and the NFL version will be out tomorrow as it will every Tuesday. I will also have an opponent preview on Georgia out sometime this week as well. Thanks again everyone!!
Perhaps the biggest VandyBoy legend of all time, David Price, remains on the 10 Day IL. Price continues to deal with a cyst on his left wrist and according to RotoWorld.com he was scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday. At the time of that writing the Red Sox were hoping the former VandyBoy would return for Sunday’s game in San Diego but manager Alex Cora, per ESPN, said Price will instead throw another bullpen session on Tuesday. Today is DP's birthday so everyone go show him some love and wish him a speedy recovery!!
Per David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Dansby Swanson, has been activated from the 10 Day IL. As of this writing Swanson has joined the Braves in Denver for their make up game versus the Colorado Rockies on Monday afternoon. The Marietta, Georgia native has been on the injured list since July 23rd with a bruised heel. The former #1 overall pick is in the midst of his best year in the bigs with a .265 average, and seventeen long balls. Swanson played three rehab games with the Class A Rome Braves where he batted .400.
Smyrna, Tennessee native Sonny Gray had his scoreless streak end this past week, but his stuff remains as electric as ever. Gray got the ball in Tuesday’s tilt versus the San Diego Padres, and proceeded to throw six innings of four hit, one run baseball. The VandyBoy struck out ten, while only issuing three free passes. Gray lowers his ERA to 2.92 and picked up the win to run his record to 9-6. Gray and his former Vanderbilt pitching coach, Derek Johnson, continue to recapture the West End Magic in the Queen City.
VandyBoy and Texas Ranger pitcher Mike Minor once again had a “clunker” of an outing Wednesday in Arlington versus Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels. Minor lasted five and two thirds innings, giving up ten hits and six runs. The only bright spot of Minor’s outing was his seven punch outs and the fact that the Rangers battled back to defeat the Angels 8-7 leading to a no decision for Minor. Minor’s season record remains at 11-7, however his ERA inflates from 2.94 to 3.17.
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler bounced back from last week’s five run outing in a big way Wednesday versus the Toronto Blue Jays. The VandyBoy and Lexington, Kentucky native threw seven innings of five hit shutout baseball, adding eight punch outs and no walks. Buehler lowers his ERA to 3.16 and earns his 10th win of the season.
Brentwood, Tennessee native Bryan Reynolds continues to make his case to be a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year. Over the last week, the rookie continued to swing a hot bat as his average was .360. Perhaps his most impressive hit was a bases clearing triple that the young left fielder hit off the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.
Rookie San Francisco Giant left fielder Mike Yastrzemski cooled off a bit during the past week, only batting .258 with one long ball, however he remains a large part of the Giants long term plans by many sources in the organization. Per RotoWorld.com, Yaz bruised his hand during Sunday's game in Oakland. He is considered day to day. Yaz has also flashed the leather this week:
New to the VandyBoys in the “Pros Weekly Update,” Drew VerHagen got the start Friday on the road versus the red hot Minnesota Twins. The former VandyBoy from Royse City, Texas proceeded to throw six innings of five hit three run baseball. The most impressive part of VerHagen’s start you ask? The fact that he struck out eleven Twins batters. On the season VerHagen has a 4-2 record with a 6.31 ERA. He has split his time between the MLB and the MILB.
Down on the farm, there are to many VandyBoys to mention in this report. Notable players that have made their presence known in the past week include Phil Pfeifer, JJ Bleday, Ryan Flaherty, and Jason Delay. Pfeifer, in what would become his final start for the AA Mississippi Braves, went eight innings of seven hit shutout baseball. The young hurler struck out nine and issued two free passes. On Monday it was announced that the Knoxville, Tennessee native would be promoted to AAA.
The VandyBoys most recent first round selection, JJ Bleday, had his hit streak halted at eleven games The rookie National Champion hit .429 in that span. Ryan “Flash” Flaherty, playing for the Cleveland Indians AAA affiliate mashed two home runs during the past week. The veteran utility man is still trying to prove to major league teams that he can still swing the lumber.
Finally, Jason Delay put his power on display this week with a pair of home runs and seven RBI. Delay is currently assigned to the AA Altoona Curve in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
