Welcome to the first edition of "VandyBoys in the Pros" for the 2021 baseball season. In this series we will look at how our VandyBoys are doing in professional baseball. This series will publish once a month. Hope you all enjoy!!
After opting out the shortened 2020 season, Commodore legend David Price has returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers. So far this year, Price has a new role as a relief pitcher. In seven games in 2021, the former #1 overall draft selection has a 1-0 record, 5.59 ERA, and one game saved.
Atlanta Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson has had a sluggish start to the new season. In 104 at bats, Swanson is hitting .202 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
After beginning the season on the injured list, Sonny Gray has gotten off to a slow start. In three starts, the Cincinnati Reds ace, has a 0-2 record, with a 5.93 ERA.
Eleven year pro Mike Minor returned to the Kansas City Royals this year and has had some decent success in the infantile stages of the 2021 season. In five starts, Minor has a 2-1 record with a 5.26 ERA.
Los Angeles Dodgers ace pitcher Walker Buehler has picked up right where he left off in 2020. Newly minted as a World Series champion, the former VandyBoy midweek starter has a 1-0 record in five starts to go along with a 3.16 ERA.
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds has had a really good start to the 2021 campaign. In 102 at bats, the Brentwood native has batted .284 with two long balls and twelve RBIs.
Mike Yastrzemski has continued to show why he’s a big part of the San Fransisco Giants rebuild. Even though his average (.215) is not there yet, “Yaz” has still slugged four homers in 79 at bats. Unfortunately he is currently on the ten day injured list with a left oblique strain.
Fellow San Fransisco Giant Tyler Beede has been continuing his rehab in hopes of coming back from Tommy John Surgery.
The newest VandyBoy turned Giant, Curt Casali has not done much with the bat, but it’s his work with the glove that’s turning heads. In just 33 at bats, Casali is only hitting .121. But during the first month of the new season, the VandyBoy caught five straight shutouts. According to an MLB.com article, Casali is just the fifth catcher in the modern (1900-present) era with a shutout streak of five or more games.
Tony Kemp has only received 36 at bats for the Oakland A’s over the season’s first month. The Franklin native has been playing mostly second base, and has been flashing the leather quite a bit as evidenced by this video below.
Carson “Filthy” Fulmer has perhaps found a home in Cincinnati. Reunited with former VandyBoys pitching coach Derek Johnson, who just so happened to be the man who recruited him to the West End, Fulmer has been getting some serious time and innings in The Show. In 13 games over the season’s first month, Fulmer has a 4.20 ERA. The ERA may not look good to some, but when you’ve had the command troubles that Carson has had, then you’ll definitely take it.
Sam Selman has only worked one inning this season for the San Fransisco Giants, but it was a clean one.
Jordan Sheffield is the newest member of the VandyBoys in the pros fraternity. The Colorado Rockies rookie relief pitcher has looked excellent in the nine games he has appeared in. The Tullahoma native sports a 2.16 ERA in 8 and one thirds innings of work.
Ben Bowden has also joined the VandyBoys in the pros fraternity in 2021. In eleven appearances for the Colorado Rockies, Bowden has a 8.64 ERA.
