I was there for all of practice today. Players were in shells and so there was no hitting and such and it makes it harder to evaluate, but here’s what stood out to me today.

  • DL Devin Lee seemed more active and productive today (or I just hadn’t noticed before—which is possible). Lee got what probably would have been a couple of sacks, though I’d classify that as a coverage sack. We talked to DL coach Larry Black after practice and Lee was a topic and you can hear how pleased he’s been with Lee’s effort.
  • Black also talked about DE Darren Agu and how happy he is with his progress. Agu has moved from the star position and is now a true defensive end and they’re hoping they can get some pass-rush production from him there. Black is also pleased with his progress and said that he’s about 255 currently and they’d ideally like to see him around 270.
  • CB Tyson Russell had a pick in one-on-one drills on a deep ball, I don’t remember who the QB was.
  • S Savion Riley picked QB Ken Seals in an 11-on-11 situation and returned it a few yards. Riley seems like a guy who’s maybe making a move on earning more playing time but S John Howse has also been out all/most of the spring and so I’m not sure what the situation is here.
  • This isn’t “reporting” but I can’t remember Seals throwing a pick all camp until today. I’ve not been at every practice but I’ve been at most. He and QB Drew Dickey have been fairly accurate and I feel like the backup QB situation is the best it’s been in a long time, at least based on what I’ve seen from them in practice. QB Walter Taylor also has obvious physical ability and a really strong arm but is behind the other two.
  • WR Will Sheppard has had his workload monitored most of camp and wasn’t participating much today. Same with WR Jayden McGowan and I don’t remember WR Daevon Walker being out there (or being a factor) today. So with that, WR Quincy Skinner probably had the best day of the scholarship wideouts and certainly turned in some nice plays.
  • I continue to be shocked at how productive the walk-on group here has been. WR Landon Wells, WR Richie Hoskins, WR Wilson Long and WR Hutch Baird have all had their moments in camp.
  • Again, it’s not been a super-strong camp for the running backs but RB Sedrick Alexander has started to flash some solid runs here and there.
  • Notables not participating today included LB Kane Patterson and OL Jake Ketschek, the latter of whom is obviously going to be out a long time.
  • Saw several recruits there including local LB target Crews Law from CPA.
  • There’s a practice Thursday that I’ll cover and a practice Friday (which is basically a walk-through for the spring game) that I won’t. On Saturday, I’ll be there and may be joined by Justin Angel and Joey Dwyer depending on schedules.
