Sorry if reposting. My assertion about 2012 on another thread got me thinking about a list. What's always fun about this kind of question is that MCBB breaks down into two wildly differing eras, with various sub-eras involved. I draw the line clearly at 1974-75, where conference second-place teams were first invited to the NCAA. Others might prefer 1985 and the 64-team field, but I think 1975 was more important.
So there will be really good second- and third-place conference teams that we have no way to compare with modern teams. Part of the fun!
Also, feel free to take into account who was more talented, who would theoretically win out of 100 games, who purely did better in the postseason, whatever. That too is part of the fun.
What did I miss?

- 1965 - pure NCAA performance as tiebreaker but I don't have a feel for how much the last 8 meant back then
- 1993
- 1974 - basically tied. I'm biased toward the year I was familiar with.
- 2007 - first non-SEC champions. Not a great seed (6) but we all know deserved better.
- 1988
- 2004
- 2012 - best team with a sub-Sweet Sixteen finish. Was this the only VU team ever to win once and lose in the 2nd round of 32? I think so. SECT champions.
<around here is where i would tend to slot the "forgotten" SEC second place teams of history> - 2017 - doubt they would have gotten past Gonzaga but really unlucky against Northwestern
- 2011 - deserved a much better matchup
- 2010 - three bad seconds
- 1991 - I wasn't very enthusiastic about G'town because UNLV was going to destroy the winner anyway. We had a really cool SECT run at Memorial so that's worth something.
- 1989 - The SEC faced total blowout this season. I don't remember the 8-9 game vs ND at all, except that the Domers wore green.
- 2008 - believe me, I want this to be lower. I just can't justify a 4-seed season below an NIT season. Then again I drove 10 hours to Tampa.... no. I can't justify it.
- 1990 - I'll put this year above two NCAA years though. Really fun postseason.
- 2016 - felt like a relief to end it. I was visiting London and kinda slept through the 3 am opening round game.
- 1997 - 10 seed not awful; it literally never occurred to me that Vandy might beat Xavier.
