I think most would agree that many of the present practices in recruiting are disgusting and just plain wrong. Here are my thoughts on how some of these could be corrected. I know that there are flaws in some of these, so I welcome your input.
1. Keep 85 scholarship total and maximum of 28 in any one year, but eliminate "gray shirts", "blue shirts", and early enrollees participating in spring practice.
2. Restore the 4 year scholarship...if you make a mistake on a player's ability, you are still obligated to him academically.
3. Number of scholarships each year would be limited to a base number of 15 plus an additional scholarship for each student who graduated the previous calendar year. (Ex If you graduate 11 in 2015 you can sign 15 + 11 = 26 in 2016) If number of graduates exceeds 13 then the extra scholarships would bump to the following year. This would put a tremendous emphasis on the importance of graduation. In theory you would only have 60 scholarship players after 4 years of extreme academic neglect. This would hopefully discourage schools from signing players and the running them off if they are "recruited over".
4. After 4 years if a school has a graduation rate of 85% or more they would get an additional 5 scholarships (90 total) for next 4 years.
5. If a player turns pro after 3 years in school, count him as a graduate if he is drafted.
