Having some free time over the holidays, I decided to watch some game film of a few New Mexico State Tim Beck offenses. Beck has a proven track record as both an offensive coordinator and head coach. His offense utilizes a lot of 21 ( 2 RB’s, 1 TE) and even 30 ( 3 RB’s, 0 TE’s) personnel, which is quite unusual for college offenses. His offense involves a lot of motion and makes defenders choose and gets them out of position. When functioning optimally, this offense moves the ball very well both grinding the ball and getting explosive plays when defenders overplay or miss assignments. On the other hand, I saw a decent amount of plays that I felt took a bit too long to develop and lost yards or led to sacks. A lot relies on the QB to make both pre and post snap reads and make the right decision quickly. The RB’s must be willing and competent blockers. Beck seems to like a 3 or even 4 back rotation. TE’s must be excellent blockers first and foremost and receiving ability is an added bonus. They are often the primary block to spring a runner free. OL have to understand blocking schemes and plays since they will often pull or trap block. WR’s must be willing blockers and be very heads up about coming back to the football helping their QB out as well as good route runners. Speed guys seem to be a priority in this offense. When I watched the highlights Diego Pavia looked like a great QB and someone who could help this team. Upon watching the full games however, he made a lot of bonehead decisions and often put the ball in harms way. A lot of the success of this offense will depend on Nate Johnson’s development and ability to read the defense and make good decisions with the ball. This is a huge offseason for Sedrick Alexander, AJ Newberry, Johann Cardenas, Deago Benson, and Chase Gillespie. Overall, good hire of a guy with a winning track record and offensive success. Need another proven receiver if possible from the portal.
