Which is about 2 bucks-
last night I met up with a friend who works as support staff at VU. We spent a lot of time talking about the campus improvement going on, and how much they are struggling to fundraise. (Duh). He agrees, it’s hard to raise money with the current situations in football and basketball. Corbin is great at funding baseball projects but he rarely taps the well for outside of the program. Don’t blame him at all. He built from scratch with zero support. But he did say the school is footing the bill when necessary. That’s check mark for the chancellor.
We talked briefly about the football team. He doesn’t attend every practice but he has been out to a lot and interacts with coaches and players daily. His biggest point is the players completely buy into what the coaches are selling. He couldn’t say the same with Mason, particular on the offense. And that is really the biggest difference between the two. Offense and defense both believe in Lea. There is no split locker room or a “head coach of the offense” situation. He is super nervous about the Hawaii trip. It will either build the team up or completely ruin the season in his opinion. He gets the vibe there is not 100% confidence in the QB situation. And could see the offense losing hope quickly if Hawaii punches them in the face early. He personally believes the way Lea has run the camp this fall, they will not have the option to pull the plug on wright if he comes out flat. The message that would be sent would be brutal, and create a lot of doubt about the staff. They worked really hard to gain the players trust, and to be wrong against possibly the worst team they will play would be crushing. What’s his opinion on the QBs? Changes every time he watches a practice. Doesn’t envy the staff with the choices they have to make. Hopes the WRs don’t check out, and embrace their roles. In his opinion the offense has one pro caliber player. Sheppard. And Vanderbilt won’t be able to utilize him like they should be. Oline has been a pleasant surprise but could just as likely be who they are matched up against. But, compared to last year, it’s a lot better. Defense has talent, but injuries have been rough. Thinks they will still match up favorably with Hawaii. But one or two key injuries during the game could be a big problem with limited depth. Especially in the trenches.
His words to fans. Pray they come out fast, and get Hawaii on their heels. It’s two teams in his opinion that could quit quickly if the other lands a punch. Just the reality of the situation. The hope they built all off-season is on shaky ground. 1-0 and 2-0 reinforces the teams buy in, and this team desperately needs it
