Fist thing THBC said was he wanted to set the record straight that he's resigning, not retiring. The way I took his and the AD's comments about him "stepping aside" is he was forced out. But I got the sense the AD isn't too happy about being forced into the interim situation and would rather start clean. This does somewhat smack of a CBJ type deal where Spurrier is at least getting his assistants an interview they wouldn't have gotten if he'd waited. Spurrier said he told his players after practice he would probably be stepping down, he wanted them to hear it first. But they took it to mean he was stepping down, so that pretty much sealed it. I thought that was interesting insight into how it all went down. It hints that the player meeting took place before the meeting with the AD and he expected to be asked to resign in that meeting and wanted to get ahead of it.
When asked why didn't he coach the game this week and then announce during the bye, Spurrier said when you know something is inevitable, you don't put it off. He went on to say he thought the staff had a good opportunity for win this week, if they played well. He didn't really sound all that confident. But I don't buy into some people's thoughts that he wanted to quit now because he didn't want his last game to be a loss to VU. I think the timing just worked out this way. I suspect that if the floods hadn't happened, he might have been gone sooner.
