UT-Martin is in town this evening for a game with Vandy. They bring in a record of 10-13 to include a win over Alabama and 2 wins over Belmont (also 2 losses.)
I don't know what kind of hawk Charlie is,
but he looks bigger than the average skyhawk
to me so I think we have the upper hand. [NOTE: This is not really Charlie, merely a reasonable facsimile.]
UT-M averages scoring 5.7 runs a game but is only hitting .246 as a team with 28 home runs (1 per game.) They have 2 good hitters and 4 decent ones, which exceeds the total for most mid-majors of 4-5 such hitters. The team ERA is 4.72 which is not good; nor is their BAA, .271
I always look for home boys among our visitor's roster and I only find one: Benny DeTrude from Ryan.
Benny is a freshman and has seen little playing time likely due him hitting 1-16 (.063.) He majors in criminal justice which is appropriate because he looks a little shifty to me but that could just be his scraggly mustache. I'm sure Benny will eventually turn into a contributor to his team as he was an outstanding high school baseball player. Hopefully, he'll also soon have a real beard as I, being lazy, am a big fan of beards.
Vandy, of course, is still #1 in the nation and averages scoring 8.4 runs a game while yielding only 2.7 The team hits .319 and is led by 4 guys batting .350 or better and a total of 7 hitting over .300. They have hit 40 home runs, led by little Carter Young with 8. Amazingly, freshman Enrique Bradfield, Jr. continues to get on base at an incredible clip -- .509 to be exact. He's also hitting .391 yet is the only starter without at least 1 home run. My guess is that IF he ever hits a home run it will be an inside-the-park variety. I look forward to watching that.
I expect Christian Little
to take the mound for Vandy. He's 2-0 with an ERA of 5.09 and BAA of .288 and has given up 4 home runs in 17.2 innings along with 20 K's. He's been somewhat inconsistent so far but, then again, which of us wasn't somewhat inconsistent when we were 17? Add to that we weren't pitching in a college baseball game and I actually think he's done quite well. He's being nursed along by Corbs and Brownie and I expect him to be a weekend starter next year.
I think Vandy easily wins this game and could hit double digits in runs yet again, something they've already done 14 times this year in just 26 games.
