The internet wasn't working properly at the Mexican restaurant I attended after today's camp, so you all get a groggy, late-night, I just drove home for five hours notebook recap of today's action in Atlanta. Unfortunately, there were a lot of no-shows at today's camp, which included Vandy commit BJ Diakite, but I was able to infiltrate some juicy details from some other notable targets and tight end commit Cole Spence.
- Alston took home running back MVP honors today. Interest from Vanderbilt started with Tim Horton last year, but that interest has transferred over with Norval McKenzie and the new staff as well. McKenzie has been recruiting Alston since his time at Louisville. He's done a Zoom chat with the staff and already has ties to the school with former teammates Mike Wright already on the team and Alan Wright and Errington Truesdell coming in this summer. Alston told me he's planning to get up to Vanderbilt this summer and is going to sit down with his Mom soon and plan things out. It will likely be an unofficial visit. He mentioned Penn State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
- Williams has four official visits set up for June, they include Nebraska, West Virginia, Louisville, and Southern Cal in that weekend order. He said he is still deciding on who will get his fifth official visit. He mentioned Minnesota, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss as other schools he's hearing from a lot, so those are your likely candidates. However, he said will likely take some unofficial as well as he sees fit. Williams has a tight relationship with Norval McKenzie since he was at Louisville and says they talk a lot.
- Martin told me he's built a real good bond with the Vanderbilt coaching staff so far. He says he talks with all the coaches on the defensive staff. He's had three or four Zoom calls with the staff so far. Martin doesn't have any officials planned at the moment and said he may take a couple during the summer and the rest during the football season. He is planning to visit Vanderbilt this summer unofficially for what he called "a cookout." I'll try to get more details on that.
- Stokes is a super-impressive kid to talk to in-person. Seems to really know what he wants with his recruiting process. Education will play a big part in his decision and that's the first thing he mentioned he like about Vanderbilt. The energy of the new staff and wanting to build Vanderbilt into a winner is also appealing to him as well. He described Norval McKenzie as "genuine." McKenzie has also been recruiting Stokes when he was at Louisville. McKenzie also described Stokes' as a "home-run hitter." Stokes said he talks to Vandy's staff everyday.
