The May 7th edition of the weekly recruiting blitz is here, let’s do this…
- Los Angeles (Calif.) Pierce College defensive end Harneet Gill is a name we’ve mentioned more than a few times on the board as Vanderbilt was expressing interest in adding him to the 2015 class. Turns out that will not happen though. Gill has informed us that he will be committing to Kansas and was not able to get the green light to visit Vanderbilt. Now, there was some speculation that it was an academic related issue as to why he didn’t visit, but it was actually an issue with Missouri, whom he signed with out of high school and spent a majority of last summer with before a foot injury. It turns out that Gill couldn’t visit due to the national letter of intent he signed with Missouri (which lasts one year) which prevents him from transferring to another SEC program.
- It appears that Vanderbilt running back target Damarea Crockett has three schools at the top of his recruiting process - they are Arizona State, Boise State, and Vanderbilt. Here's what he told ArkansasVarsity.com recently about his recruiting process:
"It's still a wait and see approach but I'm kind of leaning towards Arizona State just a lit bit but Boise State and Vanderbilt are not far behind at all."
- Three-star Northridge (Ala.) defensive end Jalen Madden is a prospect that Vanderbilt offered recently that has been flying a bit under the radar in terms of coverage on him. The 6-foot-1, 275-pound prospect also has offers from Mississippi State, Tulane, LSU, and Stanford. In regards to the Commodores, he’s very interested in the program.
“It’s a great school. The education factor is already there. Plus, it’s an SEC school, so it’s already got great competition and exposure,” he told VandySports.com recently. He plans to visit this summer.
- Justin recently mentioned an intriguing prospect on the message board recently in New Hampton Prep (N.H.) defensive end Chuk Ezeli. He is the younger brother of former Vanderbilt hoops star Festus and he is pretty good at football. He told us that he has sent his transcripts in a couple of days ago and plans to camp at Vanderbilt on June 23rd. We asked Ezeli what he liked about Vanderbilt and this was his response:
“The wonderful education that I will get if I attend and a great fan base that supports their sports teams.”
Ezeli is listed at 6-foot-3, 255-pounds with a 6-foot-9 wingspan and recorded 8 sacks and 5 pass deflections in nine games of action last season.
- 3-star Naperville (Ill.) wide receiver Emmanuel Rugamba recently told EdgyTim.com of Rivals that he has four summer camps he will definitely be attending. Those include Notre Dame, Missouri, Michigan State, and Vanderbilt. He also says he plans to narrow his recruiting list down once spring is over. It seems the Commodores are in a good position with him at the moment.
- Local Centennial (Tenn.) linebacker Tyrel Dodson has been blowing up of late on the recruiting scene. He’s picked up offers from Oregon State and Texas A&M this week to bring his total to 18 overall that also includes the likes of Missouri and Illinois.
- Sticking with the in-state prospects, McCallie (Tenn.) defensive tackle Corey McDonald says he still hears from Vanderbilt at least twice a week and plans to camp this summer as well. If McDonald were to get offered by the Commodores, it would likely be a quick decision.
“It’s my dream school to be honest. My parents love it and I do too,” he told VandySports.com recently.
- Also of note, CAK (Tenn.) tight end Austin Pope just picked up an offer from Nebraska today, that’s his eight according to Rivals. All schools that have offered or are currently showing interest like Pope as a tight end, except for Georgia Tech, who is recruiting the in-state talent as an outside linebacker. He intends to camp at Vanderbilt in June.
- On the basketball recruiting front regarding a couple of recent Vandy targets, Chipley (Fla.) shooting guard Trent Forrest committed to Florida State this week and Miller Grove (Ga.) point guard Alterique Gilbert trimmed his list of schools to five that include UConn, Illinois, Syracuse, Texas, and Louisville.
