I won't pay much attention to recruiting, mainly because it hasn't been fun since CJF left. We always lose 2-4 recruits in the final days before the late NSD. I also don't recall a single significant recruit still signing with Vandy if they forego signing in the early period. They are gone...and they are usually replaced with recruits with no Power 5 offers, and in some cases, no FCS offers.
Yep, it has pretty much sucked the last five recruiting seasons, and it's not fun watching it happen. Still, I do have a few thoughts...questions, even though I hardly pay attention to recruiting nowadays. I also have one request:
1. I heard a lot of talk about Ken Seals. Admittedly, I checked out his profile for the first time today. Why is almost everyone excited about this young man? He is a 3 star with 12 offers, and the only significant offer I see is Minnesota. If he is as good as many here seem to indicate, why does he only have a few offers from schools that are mostly irrelevant. Don't jump down my throat, please. I'm asking a serious question. I'd like to know why we want him so badly when most of the country doesn't seem to care too much about him (again, according to his profile).
2. I could be wrong, but I think this is the first season that I've seen Mason's recruiting class ranked this low so close to the early NSD (currently ranked #60). So, if he loses the better recruits on the commitment list (like he has every season...I think), will this be the first time his recruiting class ranks in the 80's. After all, he'll most likely be replacing the recruits he lost with guys ranked 2 stars or lower. If that happens, I don't see how this class remains in the 60's and I find it hard to believe it won't drop below the 70's.
And now, my request:
We know Mason will lose a couple of his better recruits. It's sad, but most likely to become a true statement. When their spots are filled with young men that are not on any FBS school's radar (there's at least one guy signed by Vandy every year of the CDM era that fits this description), can we please not say stuff like "I like his film." or "I think he is hidden gem, and he will surprise pleasant surprise to everyone." or "Something tells the rest of the nation will regret letting this guy slip through the cracks"? Can we please refrain from these kind of comments???
There are several members that make these kind of comments every year. Sure, I want these young men to succeed. Trust me, I don't want them to fail, so please don't accuse me of that. We rarely see any of these "replacement" recruits develop anything more than a scout team contributor. Devault-Smith is the only one I can recall making any kind of impact beyond the scout during the Mason era. Maybe there's another guy that's not coming to mind right now, but the overwhelming majority never see the field, other than maybe garbage time in a lopsided win or blowout loss. Heck, I'm willing to bet some of the walk-ons have more impact than the replacement recruits.
Hey, if they develop into impact players, then great! It would just be nice if we could just keep things in perspective, and say "Well, losing that guy really sucked, but it's not surprising. Maybe his replacement will eventually see some meaningful snaps and play well when he sees the field. I wish him the best."
