Opening
Congrats to Jordan Matthews for getting called up to the Panthers
Got a chance to go on the road
Excited for the opportunity to compete against SC
WIll be challenges for them
They’ve been really effective passing the ball
Rattler’s got some talented people to catch it
On offense, Vandy needs to pay attention to building chemistry in the passing game
They had protection issues and timing issues with holding onto the ball too long
There will be opportunities offensively
It’s about them fine-tuning what they’re good at
Injury-wise:
DeMarion Thomas (out-happened today)
Quincy Skinner-practiced today
CJ Taylor—is practicing but not 100% (questionable)
Christian James is fine
And that’s it from Saturday updates
QB situation
Swann has been able to practice
He’s getting healthy
It’s about getting the best 11 on the field
Seals is running with the 1s
Taylor is a piece of the plan
What’s up with the OL regression?
They feel good about the people in the room
They dealt with the loss of Junior Uzebu, they moved Ashmore out to tackle and so that’s out of position for him though he’s played well there
They’ve lost other pieces from a year ago
Feels like the protection on the whole was disappointing Saturday, Seals didn’t have time and that’s frustrating because when you get open guys your QB has to work through progressions
They’re bringing along freshmen backs
Those guys are part of the protection
They’re got to be better
How easy s it to change to a quicker passing attack at this point of the year?
At times they have provided time
Sometimes they aren’t on the same page
It’s rare that it’s been a 1-on-1 matchup that they lose
What teams are doing is they’re creating 2 and 3-man twists to work between the guards
Sometimes it’s a breakdown with one player and sometimes it’s communication
They’re juggling the three to see what gives them the best chance
They don’t always have to go conservative
You also have to design around flaws and find ways to get the ball out sooner
They used the backs to protect more vs. GA
Their backs are all under 200 pounds, does that make a difference in pass protections?
Yes
They expect those guys to handle second-level blitzers
When Seals fumbled on a pressure that was a delayed LB pressure; that was a young back making an assumption about a lack of early pressure
They don’t put back sin position to block linemen and ends
Rethinking strategy vs. SC two years ago (fourth down)
If you have a 3-point lead and you make it 6 instead of 10 (FG instead of TD) it Changes the way your opponent calls games
There are some tactical things he should have changed; knowing the outcome obviously he would have reversed it
That was a tough one, they’re a long way from that
Daevion Davis
He’s still around and emotionally connected but with the injury he’s not able to do what he needs to do
Football has defined a lot of his life to this point but he has tremendous personal characteristics including leadership ones
He’s got a lot of cool things ahead of him and he’s looking for opportunities to serve other people and can’t continue because of the knee
Thinks he could make a good coach
What has he learned 10 games in?
A lot
Learning in his role/his job is part of it and he has an opportunity to reflect on that and what he needs to do to put the best product on the field
Recruiting, relationships and developing rosters take time
They aren’t set up to be transactional and that was intentional
But it’s no different than building the stadium; they create resources to modernize and adapt to what football is becoming
They’ll have opportunities to progress the program
The results have taken a step back and that’s frustrating
There are stories of internal growth internally that they can build on
They’ll look in the portal to see where they can add and get better
They are looking to strengthen their NIL, that’s just part of modern football.
At Vandy you shouldn’t compromise in anything
They don’t want their guys to miss out on chances with NIL
They will use that to retain and to add
They need to create competition everywhere in the program, that gets the most and best from everyone
They have to be dialed in and true to their developmental model
Bringing guys along who have shown flashes of good play; they’ll be in their second and third years next year and they’ll add freshmen who’ll play
