OPENING STATEMENT
Excited to have Tim Beck as the new OC
Excited for what he brings from his success at NM State
They brought some good players in today
Recruiting office and their efforts get credit and worked hard
This is a day of celebration and also marks the end of fall and winter, marking a time they can turn the page to 2024

ON TIM BECK, HE”S OLDER AND MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN HIM BEFORE
There’s been a fight for retention of systems
They’ve had to look at past systems and say how they worked and how they didn’t
In that he wants to keep language and systems close to the players can more easily learn and retain
But he saw enough this fall to know he needed to diverge from past processes
What are they looking for?
There were 6 measurements that guide the search including an offense that can control the game (1st and 3rd-down efficiency, finishing with TDs, shorting the game, red zone effectiveness, establishing a run game, explosive passing game and using the run game to set that up, having a QB-friendly system—if you aren’t playing fast and decisive there you set yourself up to be off schedule and it’s hard to score that way)
They also wanted “a problem solver” at that spot in terms of having a QB who’s mobile and can make plays
Playing error-free was important
NM State has done a lot with what it has based on where it was
Loves the fact he’s been a HC and “I’ll lean on him to be the HC of the offense”

QBs THEY’VE SIGNED/HOW DO THEY FIT IN WITH BECK
“I think they’ll fit in really well.”
Beck has coached guys who’ve run the ball well and thrown the ball well
Offense needs to stay on schedule
Both guys are athletic and can move the pocket and mobile

DONTAE CARTER
They need improved play in the back end
He can have an immediate impact but he’ll have to earn it
What he brings with competitive nature builds into their nucleus; they weren’t happy with their season and he brings spirit, energy and a winning mentality
Hard-selling and persuasive language are a part of things but they want to be real with people and connect at that level
There is going to be adversity; they need to know they’ll be challenged but also supportive
His family has become a close part of their family
He wants to win and has a chip on his shoulder

HOW SATISFIED ARE THEY WITH QB RECRUITING IN THE PORTAL
Can’t comment specifically but he’s been pleased
Mentioned Drew Dickey and how he has respect for him as a competitor. He’s not wavered in his commitment to VU and Drew says he’ll beat out whoever comes in.

ATHLETICALLY HOW DOES THIS STACK UP TO THEIR STANDARDS
Their standards change a bit with time
This group is long
They addressed offensive skill
They wanted to start turning the WR over and they did that
They’ve had to hit WR in the portal too
They have length and athleticism in the class
There are underdeveloped frames that need time to develop
Being out on the road and the families has given him energy following a tough season
“Each cycle is a chance to move the program forward.”

WITT EDWARDS
“I hope his rodeo days are done, that’s maybe some unnecessary risk to take on.”
His family is supportive and “probably the most people I’ve been around on an in-home visit.”
They’ve recruited him as a TE
He’s dynamic/long/competitive

HOW MANY JANUARY SPOTS?
“We are right up against the number… there are one or two.”

WHIT MUSCHAMP
He has a ton of respect for his dad, he admired him coming up as a defensive coach
Never had much of a chance to interact with him until they recruited him
It’s a great family
He loves recruiting coaches’ kids
He’s got a friendship with Will and it’s been fun to connect with them
Had a blast on the official visit
The way Whit plays you can see his dad’s fingerprints on his competitive nature

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH
They have a candidate they’ve targeted and they’re finalizing that
They’ll get a release out the that’s done
They have a candidate who’ll help them function at a high level

INJURIES/TRANING METHODS, WAS THAT S&C?
To pin it on one area is careless
Part of the evaluation was where they missed in the process leading into fall camp
They identified things within coaches and how they train
The culture built or not built galvanizes that team
They need to be better

JAMAL RICHARDSON PROMOTION
The staff needs to form around the idea that Clark will be wearing a couple of hats
He’s been super impressed with Jamal/boundaries/how he holds kids accountable
He and Jimmy Thompson log more flight miles than he can imagine
He was with Jamal in San Antonio after a flight after Jamal had been in the car with Blake for 6 hours the day before and “said he was having the time of his life.”
He’s a young coach and and effective communicator and has a chance to be special.
