CLARK LEA
Excited for the week
Disappointed with the Florida outcome
Had a chance to take the lead before the fumble, had a shot with a fourth-down stop after that
Still looking for a game where the three phases interlock
Their focus is on improving the team and building to a better performance
Georgia is the best team in the country and doesn’t have a lot of holes
They recruit and coach well
Great opportunity for them to show improvement
INJURIES
CB BJ Anderson won’t be available
OL Jake Ketschek is practicing
S De’Rickey Wright doubtful, he needs consecutive weeks off and they have a bye next week
CB Martel Hight questionable
OL Grayson Morgan questionable
DB Jaylen Mahoney
QUARTERBACK
They’ve had a few weeks to get AJ to 100%, injury isn’t keeping him from playing but he was struggling in his performance and they identified that was part of the struggle
Was on a pitch count two weeks ago
Practiced fully but “still seemed a little off” last week
Seals is running with the 1s
Encouraged with where AJ is headed
They’ll re-evaluate out of the bye
Good to see AJ coming back, feels good where he’s headed
RUN DEFENSE STRUGGLES
They’re chasing the game and play down
That starts with how they teach, learn and play
When you’re playing freshmen and sophomores on the second level, they have to perform within structure and down the ball but instead they’re losing their eyes off the key and they aren’t right early in the down and lose leverage there
A couple of runs hit on pressures
FOURTH DOWNS AND ANALYTICS, HOW DO THOSE FACTOR?
The company they work with bases decisions based off what they feel about the matchups, the kicker, everything down to the weather
They tend to be hyper-aggressive, it almost feels like they’re looking for a reason to punt or kick; the default is to go
But he considers momentum, for instance, a negative play that precedes the decision
They always know what the book tells him because they’s specific to the game but he can make decisions within that
HOW DOES HAYBALL FACTOR INTO THAT?
He’s got a lot of confidence there
When you get from the 35 to the 50, the book measures a touchback against the decision to go for it
But they have a really good punter and sometimes he’s inclined to try to pin them inside the 5
KAM JOHNSON
They’d love for all the freshmen to expand their roles
He’s flashed at times
Justin Ball was banged up
CARSON BECK
Good player, they’re not fallen off much
He’s interesting because they’re done a great job in the air and they have weapons
They’ve developed chemistry with the tight ends
WR WITH DIFFERENT SKILL SETS, HOW DOES THAT DETERMINE WHEN AND WHERE WHO IS USED?
Design around skill sets
They want McGowan more involved
They can use him creatively and he’s a good downfield threat
They’re in manageable third downs often
They have to do a good job of creating space and if they can get Jayden there he can make someone miss
When you see man coverage that’s a chance to use him
Sheppard continues to be a matchup issue in tight spaces
Humphries has developed as a route runner
Sherrill has stepped up, has shown a knack for getting open downfield
Skinner is a great catch-and-run threat
He’s big, strong and fast and create tackles
If they can get first downs and extend drives they open opportunities to be creative
They played 53 snaps and that’s not enough offense
LONDON HUMPHRIES
Back at practice, not 100%
A bye week will help
FRUSTRATION OF HOW THE SEASON HAS GONE, WHAT”S THE MESSAGE TO THE TEAM?
Starts with acknowledging everyone’s frustration
They have a great design for this season and their internal expectations were high and they’ve fallen short
The wins weren’t pretty but they were wins
The three games with the nine turnovers jarred them out of rhythm and for three weeks they talked a lot about ball security; they’ve gotten back on track there and the OL protected Ken better last week and Ken made good decisions on the move
They can acknowledge frustration but they need to take action through that and fix things
They had a good practice today
They haven’t played their best football
