I was curious what happened to the coaching staffs at P5 schools that lost 20 games over the past few years. So for this post I went back over the previous three years and looked at team records from the following conferences: ACC, Big XII, Big 10, Pac-12 and SEC. Those five conferences all receive far more money than any other conferences due to their TV contracts and therefore I don't think it is fair to compare any other conferences to them

all of this research came from official athletic department websites except for Auburn who scrubbed all their coaching staff information from 15-16 and 16-17 except for Bruce Pearl's presence

in 2015-2016 there were nine Power 5 conference schools that lost at least 20 games

they were:

- Wake Forest (Manning kept his coaching staff intact for 16-17)
- BC (Christian kept staff intact)
- OK St (fired Travis Ford)
- TCU (fired Trent Johnson)
- Minnesota (Pitino replaced 1 assistant coach)
- Rutgers (Pikiell replaced all 3 of his assistants)
- Washington St (Kent replaced 1 assistant)
- Auburn (Pearl replaced 1 assistant)
- Missouri (Anderson replaced all 3 assistants)

- 2/9 of the P5 schools who lost 20 games kept their staffs intact
- 2/9 fired their HC
- 3/9 replaced 1 assistant
- 2/9 replaced more than 1 assistant

in 2016-2017 there were seven P5 schools that lost at least 20 games

they were:

- LSU (fired Johnny Jones)
- Mizzou (fired Kim Anderson)
- Washington (fired Lorenzo Romar)
- Oregon St (Tinkle kept staff intact)
- OU (Kruger kept staff intact)
- Texas (Shaka kept staff intact)
- BC (Christian replaced 1 assistant)

- 3/7 of the P5 schools who lost 20 games kept staff intact
- 3/7 fired HC
- 1 replaced 1 assistant

in 2017-2018 there were five P5 schools that lost at least 20 games

they were:

- Wake (Manning kept staff intact)
- Pitt (fired Stallings)
- Cal (Wyking Jones replaced 2 assistants)
- VU (kept staff intact)
- Ole Miss (fired Andy Kennedy)

- 2/5 of the P5 schools who lost 20 games fired their HC
- 2/5 kept their staff intact
- 1/5 replaced more than 1 assistant

over the previous 3 college basketball seasons, there have been 21 instances where a P5 school has lost at least 20 games. Wake, BC and Mizzou have all done it multiple times so only 18 schools (28%) have accomplished the feat

- 7 of the 21 seasons resulted in the HC getting fired
- 7 of the 21 seasons saw the staff remain intact
- 4 of the 21 seasons resulted in 1 assistant being replaced
- 3 of the 21 seasons resulted in more than 1 assistant being replaced

of the 18 programs that suffered a 20-loss season in any of the previous three years, Cal is the first to hit the mark this year. So they join Wake, BC and Mizzou as P5 programs with multiple 20-loss seasons over the past four years

Vandy and Wash St are almost certainly going to hit the 20-loss mark this year. So that means Wash St and VU will join Wake, BC, Mizzou and Cal as P5 schools with multiple 20-loss seasons over the past four years

just FWIW, UGA is probably going to hit the mark this year and Pitt, Wake and OK St are in danger of hitting it as well. So Pitt and OK St will likely join the group of BC, Wake, Mizzou, Cal, VU and Wash St with multiple 20-loss seasons over the last 4 years

does this program dropping into such embarrassing company force Drew to make at least one change to his staff this offseason? Would he possibly be bold enough to roll into 2019-2020 with a staff that has helped orchestrate 2 of the worst seasons any P5 conference team has suffered through in the past four years?
