To (poorly) paraphrase Leo Tolstoy in War and Peace, all good S&C programs are alike but all bad S&C programs are bad in their own delightful way. We rightly were apoplectic about the deficiency of Mason S&C program, especially at the start of his tenure. That he did not recognize the worthlessness of stretching and flexibility training in a sport that requires power and strength was evidence of his being out of his depth. Well Ken Seals discussed how the team was clearly focused on cardio and conditioning, with lots of volume and making them hot, sweaty and tired. Well it looks like that approach is also worthless. There is a reason all the top football programs emphasize strength and power almost to the exclusion of all other training. That we have a coach and a staff that doesn't emphasize that is an indictment of their abilities. I suspect part of the reason our O line and D line were thrown off the ball all game long by ETSU on Saturday was because they simply aren't Strong enough. No amount of conditioning and getting hot, sweaty and tired during fall camp will ever increase the physical attributes that are tested during a football game.
