When Vanderbilt had the ball deep in Georgia territory in the 4th quarter, it was 4th and goal from the Bulldogs' 8 yard line, and approximately 6:45 left in the game. McCrary goes back to pass, can't find an open receiver, and decides to run instead, where he is easily brought down at the 4 yard line, and Georgia takes over on downs. At this point, Mason said "I will take that decision, I will, because at that point and time we wanted field position."
Personally, I find that view a bit unusual, down 18 points with under 7 minutes to go, and the belief is that it is better to have no chance of scoring and get tackled well short of the goal line, instead of taking the chance and attempting to hit a receiver in traffic for a touchdown. McCrary throws way too many balls into traffic that get picked, but that would have been one time in which it would have seemed to have been the thing to do, and instead he ran and was tackled with no chance of scoring.
What are your (members of the board) view on this? Obviously it's a judgment/opinion call, just wondering what others judgments/opinions are.
