The Eagles defense did a solid job of shutting down Smyrna's run game and making the Bulldogs a one-dimensional team that couldn't really get any momentum going in the passing game on a very wet and sloppy field. Smyrna was able to score their lone touchdown on a botched punt attempt set them up at the two-yard line, then Vanderbilt target Ikenna Okeke hauled in a 2-yard touchdown pass.

Despite Independence not having the services of their regular starting quarterback Andrew Bunch, it didn't stop them from going down field with the electric Nate Johnson as a weapon at wide out. Johnson made a handful of catches including a nifty one-handed grab and a 49-yard touchdown grab down the sidelines.

I talked with Okeke afterwards, who noted that along with his already scheduled two official visits to Notre Dame and Penn State, he said he's thinking of scheduling an official to Missouri and he said Stanford is a possibility to down the road. He is visiting Tennessee today and did mention how improved Vanderbilt looked overall, especially defensively in their game against Western Kentucky when he was in attendance.

As we talked about during the summer, Nate Johnson was the best looking wide receiver at Vanderbilt's Friday Night Lights camp. Despite that performance, the Purdue commit told me he hasn't heard anything from the Commodores in regards to recruiting.

Our man David Sisk was out at the Pearl Cohn/CPA game putting in some late night work, he'll have some notes on that game on the board soon. He got some really good stuff in talking to him last night.
