I would love some feedback as to how important a coach is to a program.
Thinking out loud here:
Clearly Saban, Swinney, Meyer, Spurrier, Fisher, etc... These coaches are not coaching at Vanderbilt with all of the roadblocks and struggles that CCL has ahead of him. They also had better talent to start with and support of the university and the fan base that CCL is struggling to win back.
What I mean is what aspects of a coach are important?
Is it knowledge of the games X's and O's?
Vanderbilt has had plenty of HC's and assistants who knew the game, but it never translated to wins on the field.
Is it motivating players, coaches, fan base?
CJF is the only one in recent memory who seems to have excelled at all phases of motivation. Not everyone liked his charisma and attitude. We all loved his winning!
Is it talent evaluation and development?
Vanderbilt has had some players who were not heavily recruited that went on to have NFL careers (Jamie Duncan, Jamie Winborn, Todd Yoder, Jovan Haye, Wesley Johnson, Casey Hayward, Earl Bennett, DJ Moore, Zach Cunningham, Spencer Pulley, Hunter Hillenmeyer, Andre Hal, Corey Chavous, Ryan Seymour, and Dayo Odeyingbo, etc.. ) Not as many as our SEC brethren but some talent has been developed.
Is it hiring the right staff OC, DC, and other assistants?
These are the coaches that have the greatest impact on the players day to day. These are the coaches who impact the development and or regression of the players each week. We haven't had highly sought-after coaches since CJF that I know of...
Is it managing the players mental and emotional state?
To me this is CCL biggest challenge. This team is so used to losing and expecting the worst possible things to happen how can he get them to show up for practice on Monday much less for the next game? I had such hope all spring and summer, listening to the players talk about culture change and how hard they were working and then the ETSU game and it was so absolutely demoralizing as a fan to watch all that demanding work come crashing down. How did he get the team to buy in on Monday? How does he get them to buy in today?
Is it all of the above?
I tend to think it is all of the above, but some coaches are better at some aspects than others.
Is it purely a Jimmy's and Joe's issue for Vanderbilt for the next few years and CCL will succeed if he is given the tools and the time or is it something else?
I have seen the posts that CCL is not a rah-rah emotional type of Coach, but does that work when the talent level is so lacking? At some point the players tune that out!
Enough of my rambling, what do you think?
