If any of you watched this past weekend's baseball series, you could see how dramatic the talent difference is between Vandy and Tennessee. Obviously there is no answer to becoming competitive that doesn't include recruiting. That said, at this point, it seems as if Serrano has had no success whatsoever convincing the best in-state players to come to Knoxville, and that surely won't change after kids see how badly his team played here in Nashville.
Unlike so many past coaches at UT, the school actually hired a respected baseball guy to lead their program. I appreciate the fact that Serrano tells it like it is in interviews, and doesn't appear to be a shady recruiter. He sees what everyone else sees and calls a spade a spade. And he tries to remain optimistic.
But as the SEC continues to get better and better (Missouri and aTm could challenge for the SEC title the way both have been playing), UT is now the lone SEC program at the rock bottom of the barrel. I am not sure who the 13th best team might be but there is no question who the 14th is. Some of the plays I saw in the field literally made me and my family laugh out loud, it was Bad News Bears-ish.
