From hanging out in Vandy/SEC circles, we sometimes overestimate the popularity of college baseball. (There are still only really two major college sports, or arguably even one major sport with a second major tournament.)
So I like to do little mischievous name-drops to gauge how much sports fans in general know about us. I'm in Pittsburgh for a couple of weeks teaching at a summer program, and I happened to be at a poker table with folks watching the Bucs get no-hit. (I always bring such good luck.) I casually dropped into conversation, "I'm just visiting Pittsburgh, but I do have to pull for Pedro Alvarez because he's from my college."
I was really pleased at the response!:

- "Ooh, Vanderbilt?"
- Me: "Yeah, I guess we're developing a pretty good baseball program."
- "No kidding! They're the defending champions and back in the College World Series."
- "Don't they play TCU?" one guy asked.
- "No, they already got by TCU and are in the finals," chimed in another.
