After the Friday night Georgia game, I checked a few SEC stats. Vandy ranks a respectable 3rd with a 2.93 team e.r.a. behind A&M and Missouri. The A&M and Missouri staffs have walked 77 and 76 batters, respectively. The VU staff has walked 158, fourteenth among the league teams. Our staff has also struck out 319, which ranks first. I don't remember having a better equipped team to hit our way to wins when our pitching is shaky, but it surely does make for some nervous late innings. I don't know if it's realistic to expect great improvement in control this far into the season, but it would make a good staff dominating if we could cut the walks considerably.
On the offensive side, at .316 we have the third highest batting average behind LSU and A&M. We have struck out a league highest 255 times. For comparison, LSU and A&M sit at 142 and 170. We also rank 2nd at 152 in getting on base through walks. (Ms. St. is 1st at 187). This seems a bit incongruous to me, but perhaps some of our stat gurus can reconcile.
