The potential bad news situation that I had referenced for a couple of weeks ago had a good ending after all, and will not result in a departure of a key player.
I take responsibility for the text message that went out as a tweet a few weeks ago that inadvertently created this whole mess. Frankly, even though I erased it probably within 60 seconds of realizing what happened, it's probably the worst moment of my professional career and I would be lying to you if I said I wasn't sick about it and that I probably won't spent several more hours feeling awful about what happened.
At the same time, I am also glad that I didn't elaborate on the specific situation at the time and make it worse. Even though, based on the info I had at the time, that it turned out the way it did, these are the reasons I do my very best not to comment on rumors because as I said at the time, there was always a chance things could turn out differently.
And in this situation, even though the fact that things turned out well for Vanderbilt may not have made it a red-letter day for me, I am honestly happy that things took a positive turn.
This has been the toughest year I've ever had running a website, hands-down. It is very, very tough to try to be honest with your readers about what is going on and at the same time, not make the people that you cover, and quite often many of its fans as well, very, very unhappy with you. It's a burden that frankly, I haven't enjoyed carrying.
Going forward--as has always been the case even when I make mistakes--I can also assure you that I am going to continue to do the best I can to report on each situation with as much integrity and accuracy as I can. Again, I apologize for the situation and I appreciate the faith and trust many of you have shown me through the years.
