Here’s by best guess take it for whatever it worth which likely isn’t much.
As much as I have been amazed and impressed with Lea and his new staff, I think we win our bowl game and likely this is the top out year for Lea.
I’ll end on all the reasons I could be wrong be here’s why I think this. Lea still isn’t a good recruiter. He *may* be a good transfer portal recruiter but I think this was a perfect opportunity and mix of his brining is great staff additions who happened to have two amazing gamers (Pavia and Stowers in tow with them). I don’t think this was as much recruiting or even talent scouting as it was apt coaching addition scouting the really really worked out. Without Pavia and Stowers where do we land this year? I’d guess 3-4 wins.
So my best guess is this was a team that played above their talent level due to some truly unbelievable gamers and an offensive system that unless we keep changing won’t keep working in SEC speed. I think Lea will be around a decent while and we will have 5 and 6 win seasons. I think we get 7 this year and Lea doesn’t replicate. It’s just so hard in the SEC.
What could make this all wrong? A ton of things. Momentum is real and matters and we have it and finally new facilities that will contribute to that momentum. Our new coaches have shown nothing but that they are winners so they may stay a a step ahead of everyone. The portal seems to right now also be much more of an equalizer than almost anyone saw coming. That could mean we aren’t just over talented year in and out like we have been for many years minus the Franklin run. And finally there is Lea. Before the season I had him as our 4th worst coach I thought we have had since I started following, only better than Mason, Watson Brown, and Robbie Caldwell (who hardly was a HC). I’d say I was wrong and he’s better than Bobby Johnson, Rod Dowhower, and Woody in my eyes. So he’s now the third BEST to me, behind only Franklin and Dinardo as far as what people have done at Vandy versus what they inherited. We fans are so fickle.
