To my understanding, it was not former AD David Williams who gave Mason an extension -- it was the current AD. Therefore, it is Turner's name and reputation associated with it. It is highly unlikely that Turner would accept a role as merely a puppet performing the previous AD's will.
Anyone with even cursory knowledge of the situation would have understood that Mason had not earned an unconditional contract extension. In my opinion, it is highly unlikely that Turner would have acquiesced if ordered to make such a boneheaded blunder as to give Mason one.
It seems more likely that either there were performance parameters that had to be met, or AD Turner had sufficient funds already negotiated to move forward with a new coach.
Otherwise, this could be seen to reflect very poorly on Turner.
