The South Carolina Board of Trustees approved the contract for new head football coach Will Muschamp during a conference call on Monday morning. Muschamp will make $3 million his first year with the school and has a guaranteed increase of $100,000 each year over the 5-year term.
Annual guaranteed compensation
December 5, 2015-December 31, 2016: $3 million
January 1, 2017-December 31, 2017: $3.1 million
January 1, 2018-December 31, 2018: $3.2 million
January 1, 2019-December 31, 2019: $3.3 million
January 1, 2020-December 31, 2020: $3.4 million
There are, of course, incentives built into the contract as well. If the football team plays in the SEC Championship Game, Muschamp will earn a $100,000 bonus. If the Gamecocks win, he will receive an extra $50,000 in addition to the $100,000.
Postseason bowl game bonuses
Plays in a non-Big 6 Bowl game: $50,000 OR
Plays in the Capital One Bowl: $100,000 OR
Plays in a Big 6 Bowl game: $250,000 OR
Wins a Big 6 Bowl game: $300,000 OR
Plays in a CFP game: $300,000
Plays in the NCAA Championship game: $300,000 OR
Wins the NCAA Championship game: $400,000
Muschamp will be paid a $50,000 bonus if he is recognized as SEC Coach of the Year by the league and $75,000 if he wins AFCA National Coach of the Year.
Muschamp also has bonus money tied to the Academic Progress Rate (APR). He will earn one sum of the following:
APR of 950-964: $50,000 OR
APR of 965-974: $75,000 OR
APR of 975 or higher: $100,000
Termination details
If Muschamp terminates his employment agreement, he must pay the following:
December 7, 2015-December 31, 2016: $7 million
January 1, 2017-December 31, 2017: $6 million
January 1, 2018-December 31, 2018: $5 million
January 1, 2019-December 31, 2019: $4 million
January 1, 2020-December 31, 2020: $3 million
The university can terminate the contract without cause at any time upon 10 days written notice to Muschamp. In such even, the school will pay an amount equal to 70 percent of the coach's annual guaranteed compensation for the remaining term of the deal.
