Former Vanderbilt player Darshawn McClellan has been named a Player Development Assistant for the Commodores, head men’s basketball coach Kevin Stallings announced Thursday. McClellan joins the Commodore program after a playing career overseas and working in the private sector.
McClellan graduated from Vanderbilt in 2011 and played in 88 career games and started 13. He averaged 2.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in his career, and scored a career-high 11 points in a Vanderbilt win at Arkansas while also adding three rebounds, two assists, and a block against the Razorbacks.
“We’re excited to add Darshawn to our staff,” said Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings. “He is a quality individual who has a great relationship with our current staff and can provide great insight and guidance to our players as they progress in their careers, both on and off the floor, here at Vanderbilt.”
McClellan graduated with a degree in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt, and played a fifth year with Louisiana-Lafayette as a graduate student and averaged 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in his only season with the Ragin’ Cajuns.
McClellan played professionally in Iceland, Japan, and Luxembourg in 2013 and 2014, and served as an assistant at Thomas Edison High School, his alma mater in Fresno, Calif., in his offseasons. After moving to Nashville in 2014, he served as a counselor at Youth Villages, a private nonprofit dedicated to helping thousands of emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families live successfully.
"I am extremely excited to be back with the Vanderbilt Men's Basketball Program,” said McClellan. “I was fortunate enough to be a student athlete here from 2007-11, and did not imagine that I would be returning here to begin a coaching career as the Player Development Assistant. I am beyond grateful for all that Coach Stallings has done for me, and I look forward to continuing the growth of our program in any way that I can."
