"Missed" on mention of Bowden vs Wright (in my opinion) [Let's hope they both deliver, of course.]
As the past few years have shown, trying to predict an NCAA champion is nearly impossible. Vanderbilt won last year's title despite being the fifth-best team in the SEC. All it takes is a hot bat, a few steady pitchers and some role player to step up and become a big star for two weeks in Omaha. That's what the Commodores did last year. Let's see who rides that recipe to glory this time.
The defending champion: It could be argued that last year's Vanderbilt squad was a year ahead of schedule, after finishing fifth in the conference and still raising the championship hardware. This year the Dores feature three first-round draftees in shortstop Dansby Swanson and pitchers Carson Fulmer and Walker Buehler. Oh, don't worry, Vanderbilt has a few freshmen and sophomores who are future first-rounders, too. All season, the Dores seemed to lack consistency, playing very up-and-down. But the past few weeks have seen the VU squad everyone was expecting, going 11-3 after the series loss to Florida and hitting .354 as a team in the NCAA tournament. Let's see what the defending champs have for us.
The favorite: One team that handled the Commodores this season was the piping-hot Florida Gators, who have won three of the four meetings between the two this year.
