Lots of confusion I’ve noticed when discussing the two-
Rpo-
Linemen stay in a pass set (or are suppose to). Qb has a read that determine if he should hand it off or pull and throw the pass option. Rpo is not a designed option for the QB to run. Vanderbilt runs a RPO
Read option
Is strictly a run play where the QB reads the end (or free release) and decides to keep the ball or not. The Oline is running a run blocking scheme, any attempt at a pass would be a penalty for illegal man downfield. (Oline). Vanderbilt might on occasion run a read option with Swann but 99.9% of the time he is bluffing and doing a slow jog to “sell”
Where Swann struggles, in my opinion, is making the right read quick enough for the run part of the action. Generally speaking the rpo is a slant route or a throw within 5 yards. Shep has scored 2 TDs on it. Swann generally makes a very accurate throw. With experience, he has the tools to be a successful rpo QB. Is it the best offense for Vanderbilt? Maybe. In sec matchups they aren’t going to win the 1v1 Oline blocks. In the previous two games Vanderbilt has looked soft on the run blocking. The rpo makes a defense have to hesitate and respect the pass, but it also takes the teeth out of the Oline who have to stay within the 3 yard buffer. Curious to see how it plays out against wake.
