I'm going to take a stab at predicting the starters and the rotation for men's basketball for the upcoming season. I listed the roster in another post, so I'm using that data, direct from VUcommodores.com here:
Starting 5:
The most intriguing player on the roster has to be DJ Harvey. He averaged 10ppg as a freshman at Notre Dame playing in the ACC against grown men. He hasn't played in a season so he may be rusty, but then again, he's been with Stackhouse since Day 1 in practice and he's got experience in the scheme. Ideally, he could be a 2-3-4 matchup nightmare where he's quick enough to guard the opponent's SG while leading the offense attacking the basket.
There is no shortage of height or bulk on this team. I hope this is the result of a serious commitment to the weight room and the strength program. The Forwards are almost all universally 220+ and that makes me smile. Combine athleticism with muscle and you won't get pushed around under the rim. You can impose your will on your opponent and at worst fight to a draw on the boards. These things take lots of hard work to develop, but they reap benefits. I hope the guards have also been hitting the weight room.
Another aspect that interests me is an idea we haven't had here in years: depth. Hell, we've been struggling to put 5 guys with a pulse on the floor in recent seasons. Last season, we had to play multiple walk-ons for serious minutes of SEC games due to a lack of warm bodies. Not Stackhouse's fault obviously. He was redshirting 3 scholarships due to transfer rules and we just had atrocious injury luck. G-d willing, we won't have the same limitations.
There are a ton of freshman and newcomers on this squad. These are guys who either didn't play or weren't on the team last year. Out of 13 scholarship athletes, more than half (7) weren't in uniform last year. Of the remaining 6 who were, 3 were true freshman last season and they played major minutes and got heavy usage. Which is to say, we still have a very young squad which will experience growing pains. However, this team does have some size, depth, athleticism and talent and I think they will show a huge amount of heart, just like last year's team did.
