Jones, Baldwin IV, Kornet honored by the SEC

Three Commodores honored by SEC coaches Tuesday.

Vanderbilt junior center Damian Jones was named to the All-SEC 1st Team, sophomore Wade Baldwin IV was named to the second team, and junior forward Luke Kornet was named to the All-SEC Defensive team by the league’s 14 coaches, in an announcement made by the league office on Tuesday.

The trio become the 35th, 36th, and 37th selections, respectively, to be honored as an All-SEC team member of the Kevin Stallings' era, while Jones' first-team honor is the program's 57th selection since 1949 and his second consecutive appearance on the first team. Baldwin IV is the programs’ 55th second-team selection by the coaches or the media, and Kornet joins Jones and former Commodore Jeffery Taylor as the only Vanderbilt players named to the All-Defensive team.

Jones, who averages 14.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season, has scored in double figures in 25 games this season and 20 or more points on six different occasions. Jones scored a career-high 27 points at Florida, tied a career high in field goals made with 12 and set a new FG% single-game record with at least ten field goals made against the Gators (12-13, 92.3%). He is second in the SEC in field goal percentage in all games (59.4%) and first in the SEC in league games only (62.8%).

Baldwin, who leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game, also averages 5.1 assists per game, which ranks third in the conference in all games. His 6.2 assists per game in league play also ranks second in the SEC. His 4.76 career assist average is second on Vanderbilt’s all-time list, and his 5.1 assist average this season is tied for sixth with Vanderbilt’s all-time assist leader, Atiba Prater.

Kornet, one of the SEC’s top rim protectors who leads the SEC in blocks in all games (2.96) and in league games only (3.2), also ranks seventh in the nation in blocks. Kornet is also emerging as one of Vanderbilt’s top shot blockers in the program’s history, with his 2015-16 block average currently the best in program history and his 77 blocks so far this season ranks second to Festus Ezeli’s 87 blocks in the 2010-11 season.
