Vandy vs. Duke/Kansas/Rutgers--Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

Similar moribund programs like ours who have been down have been able to figure out how to turn things around quickly with a new coach:

Schiano took over at Rutgers--they had not won a conference game in 2 years. He won 3 conference games in year 1 and improved their team from 135th to 71st in the country year 1 in the Sagarins.

Leipold took over at Kansas--they were winless in conference the year prior. He scratched out 1 conference win the first year and will probably have them bowl-eligible in year 2 (they already have 5 wins). They have improved more than 80 spots (from 130 to 47) in Sagarins since he took over.

Mike Elko at Duke took over this year--Duke was winless in conference last year. Like Leipold, he already has them on the brink of bowl eligibility and is .500 in conference games in year 1. 138 in Sagarin last year, 66 this year.

Did these programs have better talent to work with that made a quick fix easier? Absolutely not. In fact, quite the opposite. Recruiting class rankings average over the last 5 years per 247:

Vanderbilt: 46.4
Rutgers: 50.6
Duke: 56.6
Kansas: 72.8

So on paper, we have better talent from our recruiting classes. If you think the rankings are off, keep in mind these are from 247 for which our Director of Recruiting was the head honcho. If you want to blame the transfer portal, our head coach has already admitted they fell short in this area.

All that to say, we are the biggest excuse-making program I have ever seen. Other coaches can take dead programs around and breathe life into them almost instantly. We give all the reasons we can't. Other teams can pull off upsets and play big teams competitively. We focus on all the excuses and none of the solutions.

Successful people find a way. Losers find excuses. It is time for this program and this fanbase to stop focusing on excuses and focus on solutions.

CCL Comments

Did CCL throw an interception at the end of the first half that led to a 10 point turnaround for MO? Did CCL miss all the tackles on MO’s first TD? Did CCL drop any of the targeted passes that could have generated more offense? Did CCL fail to move the MO defensive front a few inches to make a critical first down at the end of the game which could have resulted in a win or OT? No, players did.

Did CCL and his staff make the requisite adjustments at halftime to allow their players to rally from a 17 point deficit to within inches of beating an SEC team favored to win by 14.5 points (and led Ga with 4 minutes to play) at its homecoming? Yes, and the players responded positively and did not quit.

It will take more than two years to overcome the culture and the talent gap inherited by this coaching staff. Most of the few successful VU coaches over my 54 years of being a fan were primarily looking at VU as a stepping stone to a better situation and had no interest in staying long term — i.e., Sloan, Dinardo, Franklin. CCL was raised and educated in Nashville (MBA and VU), was a VU player, has family in Nashville and has a very personal interest in making VU a competitive member of the SEC for the long term.

A fan, according to the American Heritage College Dictionary, is “an ardent devotee, an enthusiast.” I’m tired of reading constant criticism, many times personal, about the coaches and players. Do they make mistakes, of course, they’re human like all of us. Was the play call on 4th down a good call? Not in my opinion. How about a QB sneak with 2 TE’s as RB’s to push the QB a few more inches?

I understand constructive criticism but can’t we be fans that are supportive and enthusiastic? Playing and coaching football in the SEC is hard work and our players and coaches should be supported as they improve the culture, talent and competitiveness of VU football.

That’s my take. Anchor Down!

Vandy must do ________to win.

Curious what responses will be here. I’m going with hold Missou under 100 yards rushing. They have two capable backs that could run wild on VU. I actually think the VU secondary might not give up 400 passing yards in this one. If they do the DC must walk home. They aren’t a passing juggernaut. Not even close. They get Lovett back this week so hoping he doesn’t help their passing game a ton.

The Fourth and 1 call isn’t the real crime…

On the preceding third down the TE was wide open. Literally any catchable ball other than one that requires the TE to dive allows the TE to easily pick up the first down. Once the decision was made to go with Swann, Seals had to be made the backup.

Having the backup QB be a player who can’t run the offense is the proximate cause of the 4th and 1 failure.

Football Observations

The only bright spots I saw were:
1) Patrick Smith looks SEC
2) Special Teams look SEC
3) New food options taste SEC
4) The crowd - - there were a lot of people there hoping for this ray-of-light and release from the Derek Mason enslavement - - a new beginning of a real program and ascent toward the CJF years. The crowd was pretty good all things considered and a tip of the cap to them.

The negatives:
1) Our #1 RB is wearing a OL leg brace
2) Our OL completely annihilated by FCS
3) WR zero separation against FCS
4) QBs all out of sorts and as I said earlier couldn’t play catch with me and my kids at Vandyville we would be chasing bouncing footballs all over the dang place
5) Our entire defense would shift the wrong way on any traps etc it was remarkable
6) Our DBs were toyed with
7) The Dline literally looked like they were
playing the Titans

I posted early in the 3rd Qtr this game would turn into a blowout - - it really was far worse than the score indicated. If I was Clark Lea I would bow down and wire some $ to Derek Mason and Randy Sanders and ask them to send me an email on how to coach football.

Tennessee/Vanderbilt Athletics

I know I can't be the only one noticing the overall success of Tennessee athletics right now. Yes, I know they were down and out just 2-3 years ago but they got their AD hire right. I think when we settled on AD Candice Lee, we missed our chance of a new, fresh start. Am I wrong? Is this not on anyone else's mind? Yes we are making "facility upgrades" but we sure do move at a snail's pace. No other school moves this slow. It's becoming very clear that we don't belong in SEC.

Tennessee
Baseball-Top Tier
MBB-Top Tier
WBB-Top Tier
Softball-Historically Top Tier
Football-Top Tier and not slowing down in recruiting and with portal and NIL firing on all cylinders

Vanderbilt
Baseball-Top Tier but selective with portal and NIL
MBB-Bottom Tier and just extended coach
WBB-Last and just lost 3 starters prior to season to injury
Softball-N/A
Football-Last and could be outbid for our own promising younger players (Swann, McGowan) in offseason with no strong NIL in place
