Story Vanderbilt announces NIL marketplace (press release)

ASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt Athletics and Opendorse have teamed up to launch a name, image and likeness marketplace for Commodore student-athletes.

The marketplace offers Commodore student-athletes a quick and easy way for businesses, sponsors and supporters to get in touch with student-athletes in accordance with local laws and NCAA regulations.

“Our goal is to fully support our student-athletes as they manage their personal brands and benefit from name, image and likeness opportunities,” said Candice Lee, vice chancellor for athletics and university affairs and athletic director. “This collaboration with Opendorse is another step for us as we continue to assist our student-athletes in this evolving environment.”

Through the marketplace, Vanderbilt student-athletes can engage in promotional and related opportunities from Commodore fans, brands, sponsors and donors who can browse, propose, book and pay for name, image and likeness activities in one compliant platform. Student-athletes can also review opportunities, accept deals and receive compensation all in one place. Once a deal is completed, the activity is automatically disclosed to ensure compliance. Each Vanderbilt student-athlete also has an Opendorse profile, which allows staff to share visual media and messages directly to the student-athlete on demand to publish to social media platforms with a single tap.

“Today’s launch of the Vanderbilt Marketplace is the next step to maximizing NIL opportunities for every student-athlete,” Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence said. “I can’t wait to see how Commodores fans, brands, donors and sponsors support student-athletes, and I’m proud that Opendorse can provide the marketplace technology to make that happen.”

About Opendorse
Based in Lincoln, Nebraska, Opendorse was founded in 2012. Its aim today is to help maximize name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes while delivering security and simplicity for all involved parties. The Opendorse-powered marketplace is built on a decade of athlete marketing technology and experience. Opendorse has facilitated hundreds of thousands of name, image and likeness deals and endorsements with athletes at every level of sport. The marketplace is used by over 90,000 athletes to manage deals from pitch to payment, and even tax prep, every day.

Baseball Paraphrasing Tim Corbin's Tuesday comments

What did you learn from the two scrimmages?
Good to get young kids pitching
Traveling for the first time
Learning where players need to develop
Just playing as a group

Ryan Ginther
He’s coming along fine
There are more strikes in his outings
Pitches aggressively, throws the ball in to both sides
More comfortable in second year year

Jonathan Vastine and Troy LaNeve, are they hurt?
LaNeve out until January/February
Vastine training, not quite ready to go full speed

Freshman pitchers
Dutkanych is aggressive, pitches aggressively
Got comfortable after 1st inning vs. ASU
Other kids have not thrown a ton

Greyson Carter
He’s done a lot with his delivery, he’s worked hard on that and his body
Off-speed stuff is better, he’s not a finished product but the breaking stuff is better
Still work to do
Good velocity, has a chance to be a good power pitcher
Command, getting to front side of count need work

Alan Espinal
He’s coming along as a hitter, has made improvements
Played with a championship team this summer
Loves the game, loves the team, loves the training, he’s working all the time
His story to get here is unique
Hitting is coming along
His barrel flashes, he’s just got to make more contact
Taught himself to speak English by watching cartoons
Had such a strong desire to be here he made things happen as a junior and senior that weren’t easy
This while he learned English and his parents spoke minimal English
Very much self made

Dutkanych, what’s the story on him getting 80
AD probably have picked 84
There was another kid who wore 80 who was pretty good too, not to compare the two

ASU scrimmages, there was some power, where is the team in that regard?
Not sure
What was good Sunday was putting the ball in the middle of the field and running the bases
Thinks they run bases well and they take pride in that
They have a chance to play fast, the kids move well
McKenzie/Bradfield/Polk all move well

McKenzie
He’s improved and more comfortable
Playing like he belongs
Trains well
Grateful for how he operates here, always in a good mood, happy kid
Fun to watch
He’s better offensively, hitting the ball the other way and with 2 strikes
Got a lot of ABs this summer

Owen and Cunningham
They’re just started throwing again
Hewett not starting
No story, he’s playing well, is a good player, can only put nine out there
Kids just like him are pretty good
He got to play a fair amount the other day

RJ Austin at first
We needed someone to do it
Noland has done it
Velazquez has played 1st and 3rd
He’s quick at 1st
His reaction to the baseball is a lot like Austin Martin’s when it’s hit
Throws the ball well, has a strong arm, could probably play all 3 OF positions
For the time being that’s a good spot for him to learn, it’s more about just catching rather than catching and throwing

HIs AB vs Samford that went for a double, what’s that say
It was against their closer, 12 pitches, fouled off 3 FB and then a breaking ball and then a FB that he hammered
Showed competitiveness to put the ball in play
He doesn’t give in with two strikes so far
Has been very competitive in hitting

Cade Law playing catcher after being a potential D1 QB recruit
He’s a leader, you can see QB in him in how he communicates and reacts
His personality can make him a leader
Well raised and mature
Handles his business well
Timely
On point
Just needs to play
Football helped make him tough
How he operates inside the day
Tate Kolwyck is a good comp—was organized, mature, strong academically, loved people
If you’re a good QB and leading others it’s because you care about others

Older pitchers who haven’t thrown
They’ll most likely pitch after fall is over vs. hitters
Pitchers have to have a spell of time to put down the ball—Reilly will start soon

Hliboki, Doolin
Hliboki was close to throwing last weekend against their hitters
Doolin may be later
Hliboki was a silver bullet before, you used him wherever he could because he threw strikes
It’s about durability, you have to be mindful of where they’ve been
If they were staters by April or May, that could happen
It’s hard to predict those guys, Owen, etc.
Hiboki throws strikes in his bullpens, the misses are small and not big, which is what you’d expect from a young pitcher, plus, he’s stronger

Holton/Futtrell
Looking good, not doing too much mound work, will most likely do more work in December

Saturday weather & attendance

Saturday forecast: cloudy, with rain early evening

If there is a more snake bit football program in the country, I cant name it. Is rain forecast for absolutely every home game ? VU desperately needs a win, and fans in the stands can make a difference in tight games. Typically, Friday will be simply gorgeous here in Nashville, with clouds and rain moving in Saturday afternoon just in time for kick-off. The football gods take great pleasure in making everything more difficult at the Dudley. I hope folks still show up.

Football Paraphrasing Clark Lea's comments on Tuesday

Opening
Good to be playing
Good things came out of the Missouri game, but result wasn’t what they wanted
Productive bye week
Trying to get healthy but everyone struggles with that at this time
Look forward to watching the team compete for a good result

What is Swann’s status?
Heading in the right direction
He practiced today
Neds to make it through the week

Difference in execution first and second half of Missouri
First half, two long plays flipped the fields
Those built momentum
One was poor leverage and pursuit
They there a perimeter screen and they were out of position, they still should have made a tackle but it went for a TD
That is good design and they weren’t detailed enough early to be aggressive late
The 2-minute drive at half, they gave up some yards but played to the situation
They challenged the guys in the second half and they dialed into structure and identity and “to me, we took the game over.”
Defense has been up and down this year
He’s seen gradual improvement even if it’s not shown up in results
They’re growing confidence together
They need to be detailed in their execution
When they play to an identity they’ve at times been able to dictate terms of play
After Georgia he talked about being a participant vs. being an aggressor
They have to be committed to structure, it’s the difference between 1st and 10 being 2nd and 10 or 2nd and 2
In the second half they did that better
He sees a pattern of growth and execution

The loss to SC last year, how does that hurt or motivate?
Just like every other game, they haven’t focused much on that
There are guys in the locker room that felt the sting of that but they won’t carry it into the locker room
They have to have a great week of prep
They can’t just show up on Saturday, that’s got to be earned through the week
The proof is in the doing
Those of us were there remember it, but this team has to find a higher level and have a complete performance vs. a conference opponent

Spencer Rattler
He’s impressive, has had spurts of impressive play
Had good skill, big receiving targets, really talented run game
At times he’s knocked off rhythm
When pre-snap he sees the coverage he gets the ball out on time
A QB of his caliber can create explosive plays
Made good runs vs. Missouri too
He’s talented, they’ll be stressed to be in the right spots, to cap the verticals
From there, they’ll rely on front four plus pressure to shorten the down
They did that vs. Georgia in the second half

Agu/Sannienola/Gillespie/Cox
On the depth chart, some will be wait-and-see evaluations
They expect all to be available but don’t know for certain

What stands out about SC defense
Capable on offense, disruptive on defense
They create turnovers that influence outcomes
Special teams is game-changing
You can’t make mistakes, they’ll capitalize on them
They build on positive plays, there’s a ripple effect there
That gave them a chance to build

Special teams
They have good players they put in a good position
Pete Lembo puts them in a good spot
They design around skill and capitalize on mistakes
They find weak spots in protection
They have to not only not give those up but create big plays themselves
They had a long return vs. Missouri called back
Had a return TD to open the A&M game
They have to put and apply pressure on them

Daevion Davis
Won’t play this week
Post-practice last week he did some individual work post-practice with Larry Black
No projected return date yet

Hoops Team has improved Dramatically--But Questions Remain

Pulled this from a post earlier this year, but wanted to generate some conversation about expectations going into this year:

Bryce Drew:
Year 1--10 SEC wins, Kenpom 33
Year 2--6 SEC wins, Kenpom 91
Year 3--0 SEC wins, Kenpom 155

Jerry Stackhouse:
Year 1--3 SEC wins, Kenpom 169
Year 2--3 SEC wins, Kenpom 104
Year 3--7 SEC wins, Kenpom 64

Last year we got better as the season progressed--2 wins in the SEC tournament--lost by 6 to Kentucky in quarterfinals, then made it to the quarterfinals of the NIT and lost a heartbreaker to Xavier after beating Belmont and #1 seed Dayton

We are on the uptrend, but this year is going to be telling. How do we do without Pippen? What if we slide back? Stackhouse has taken the program from rock bottom winless SEC season under Drew and improved it over 100 spots from year 1 to year 3 in KenPom.

I still think we need to improve recruiting. Yes, we have a top 25 class this year, but he barfed his first couple of years on the recruiting trail (none of last years' freshman are even on the team anymore) and the 2023 class is ranked in the mid-30's on one site and #53 here with 3 3-stars and no consensus Top 150 players. I was hoping with Stack's star power and AAU connections he could get some big-timers to campus. Hasn't really happened yet. Needs to IMO. X's and O's are there. Kids compete. Need to stack some classes/transfers with some talent.
