Alabama fires baseball coach Brad Bohannon amid betting probe

Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired Thursday for "violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees," the school announced.

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne "has initiated the termination process" for Bohannon, who had been the Crimson Tide's coach since June 2017.

Jason Jackson will serve as Alabama's interim coach, according to the school, which said it will not provide further comment due to an "ongoing review."

Bohannon's firing came three days after suspicious wagering was detected on the Crimson Tide's game at LSU on April 28, prompting multiple states to suspend betting on Alabama baseball.

CBB Coaching Grades

Matt Norlander posted his CBB coaching grades 4 years after hire. Here's his comments on Stack. All seems reasonable to me. Of note, he calls Vandy "one of the three toughest jobs in the conference", which all things considered on today's landscape, I think I now agree with. I certainly wouldn't have 5 years ago. Of note, Nate Oats got a B+. Musselman got an A-. Buzz Williams got a B.

"Not an easy one to grade here. When he got the job, Stackhouse was the rare man who inherited a power-conference team that had gone winless in league play the year before. He's done a solid job in pushing Vandy back into SEC competitiveness as of late. Overall, the school is 61-69 (.469) the last four years. In the SEC, Stackhouse is 24-46 at one of the three toughest jobs in the conference, having finished 11th, 13th and 14th in his first three years, but tying for fourth last season. Though he came close in March, he still hasn't made an NCAA Tournament. Vandy's 4-2 in the past two NITs. He needs a star to get the team back to relevance. He's also been attached to the Raptors opening, but I believe he'll be back in Nashville for Year 5. Grade: C+.

Ohio halts betting on Alabama baseball after suspicious activity

David PurdumESPN Staff Writer

Ohio gambling regulators on Monday instructed the state's licensed sportsbooks to halt betting on college baseball games involving Alabama after suspicious wagering activity was detected on the Crimson Tide's game against top-ranked LSU on Friday.
The directive, issued by Ohio Casino Control Commission executive director Matthew T. Schuler and obtained by ESPN, prohibits "the acceptance of any wagers on University of Alabama baseball effective immediately."

Schuler wrote that the emergency order was in response to a report from an independent integrity monitor. On Friday, U.S. Integrity, a Las Vegas-based firm that monitors the betting markets, issued an alert to its sportsbook clients regarding "suspicious wagering activity" involving the Alabama-LSU game.

Because there is no national gaming regulator, a halt on wagering typically happens on a state-by-state basis.

ESPN has reached out to the Ohio Casino Control Commission for comment.

LSU led Alabama 8-1 after seven innings and held off a late rally by the Crimson Tide for an 8-6 victory on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Tigers were around -245 favorites over the Crimson Tide in the game in question.

Alabama plays Vanderbilt on Thursday.

Baseball: some positive impressions (and one negative)

After this weekend, here are some positive impressions I have:
1. We saw VandyBoys baseball: exceptional defense; solid pitching; solid hitting (okay, Sunday a little shaky but in the end, the hitters got it done)
2. This could end up being a very, very good team.
3. When he is hitting and/or getting on base, Enrique is one terrific player.
4. Opponents simply cannot touch Nick Maldonado.
5. RJ Schreck can flat out hit.
And one long-standing negative: Just one man's opinion but the antics of the two whistlers make the atmosphere at The Hawk very, very unpleasant. Vanderbilt encourages fans to report unruly or disruptive fans. If their behavior does not fall under this category, I don't know what does.
