Was it me or did a few of the Ball State players

,,.look like we should pick them up for next year? The TE and DE looked legit…and one of the LBs. The QB actually looked like he could do well in this system.

All of this is to say we should be really acquiring elite-level talent but I love players that overachieve and I kind of feel like we are built for that.

Three-star WR talks Vandy visit

Recent Purdue decommit LeBron Hill visited Vanderbilt last weekend. The three-star wideout was impressed with what he found.

"Man, Coach Lea and his passion for the game is just amazing," Hill said. "it's something I'd want to be apart of."

The message that coach Lea had for Hill was pretty straightforward too.

"That if I was to come to Vanderbilt he’s gonna give me everything he has. Just like what he’s currently doing with his guys night in and night out," Hill said.

Lea has the program in good position for Hill after this visit. He's heard from many schools since backing off his previous commitment so we are a ways away from a decision. But Vanderbilt will be in this one until the end.

Have a sinking feeling about Texas.

Every way I slice it in the stats this team is elite. On Defense especially. #1 FEI Oppononent adjusted defense in the Nation. #1 in stop rate and #1 in fewest pts per drive in the nation.

Pass D vs FBS- number 1 in conference. better than any we've faced by far.
Rush D vs FBS- number 4 in conference., better than any we've faced so far.

Georgia game provides little hope. 4 turnovers made that game a bit more lopsided score wise.

Georgia kept them to 1.1 yards per rush and D line won the day for them. We are giving up 5.04 yards a carry in conference play- ranked 15th in conference.

A ton of speed in their WR room. Lead the league in passing TD's and 2nd in 15 yard plus passing plays. We are 13th in opposing QB rating in conference. Bad match up for us all around for us .

I hope i'm wrong bc this is being billed as having the biggest potential recruit attendance our history.

on the hand.... Pavia?

Basketball Preseason Predictions

Hey folks! Now that basketball season is less than two weeks away I’m back on the board with my thoughts heading into this year.

I’m pumped to finally have some good basketball in memorial. Byington runs some really great stuff on offense. After re-watching all the new players film and Byingtons system combined with a little bit of intel on the scrimmage here’s where I’m at. I also took a peak at JMU’s stats from last year to come up with these.

Leading Scorers and some guesses on key stats:
1. Edwards: 16 PPG, 3 AST, 2 TO, 82% FT, 34% from 3.
2. Hoggard: 12.2 PPG, 5.7 AST, 1.3 STL, 2 TO, 4 REBs, 30% from 3, 40% FG%, 80% FT
3. Nickel: 10.1 PPG, 39% from 3, 83% FT, 3 AST
4. Glock: 9.9 PPG, 7 REB, 33% from 3, 1 BLK, 70% FT, 55% FG
5. Carey: 9.8 PPG, 8 REB, 60% FT, 25% from 3, 1 STL, 60% FG, 2.3 AST
6. Manon: 8.5 PPG, 2 STL, 3.5 REB, 3 AST, below 30% from 3, 2 TO, 70% FT
7. Collins: 8.4 PPG, 1 STL, 83% FT, 34% from 3, 2 REB, 3 AST
8. Tanner: 4 PPG, 1 AST, 33% from 3, 74% FT
9. Huffman: 3 PPG, 2 REB, 2 AST, .8 STL
10. Roberts: 3 PPG, .8 BLK, 3 REB

Key stats from JMU that we hope translate here:
Byingtons team last year ranked 11th in PPG (83.2) while finishing top 35 in assists. They finished top 15 in steals.

Hot takes:
1. Jason Edwards is a dark horse all-sec member.
2. We beat Tennessee twice
3. Tyler Tanner has 3 games with over 10 PPG
4. Tyler Nickel hits a game winner

Fernando Valenzuela

One of a kind is a description that can be pretty casually tossed out, but Fernando Valenzuela was definitely one of a kind.

I am an old case. Valenzuela was actually younger than me. People tell me confidential information all the time, because they know I cannot remember it. But, I’m pretty sure I recall (most of) this story pretty well.

Anyway, years ago I was listening to this interview with a woman whose first name was Sutton. Don’t recall the reason for her fame as a celebrity, but she was asked how she got her name. She said her dad was a huge Dodgers fan and the day she was born Don Sutton was pitching for the Dodgers. The interviewer said that’s a very interesting story and she said, “That’s nothing, it would have been real interesting if I was born the next day.” When she was asked why she replied, “Because Fernando Valenzuela started that day, and my dad was a huge fan of his.”

Pavia named to the Manning Award watch list (Vanderbilt press release)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia has been added to the Manning Award Watch List.

Pavia is one of 14 additions to the list by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which manages the award. It is presented annually to the nation's top quarterback and is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

Pavia has led No. 25/25 Vanderbilt to a 5-2 start, its best since 2008, as well as the program's first top-25 ranking since the end of the 2013 season.

The Albuquerque, New Mexico, native is 12th among FBS quarterbacks in passing efficiency and 19th in yards per completion. He leads SEC quarterbacks with 470 rushing yards and engineered the team's first win in program history over the nation's top-ranked team on Oct. 5 against Alabama.

Pavia has already been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List and at various points chosen as player of the week by the Manning Award, Davey O'Brien Award, Maxwell Award and SEC.

The Commodores hunt for their second top-five victory on Saturday when No. 5/6 Texas visits FirstBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m. on SEC Network.

Time for the alumni to step up!

Now is the time for y’all rich asses to pony up for tickets, fly into town, tailgate and go see your Dores beat Texas.

No excuses, it’s Tuesday, still plenty of time to make it work. Tell your wives you’re going and they can come too or not but you’ll be there.

Anybody thinking about making it happen?

I am happy to see all of the tickets asks on this site. I would love to have a decent turnout to support this team.

There will only be once that Texas makes their first trip to Nashville as an SEC member.

Next season, life after Diego

So this morning on 104.5, Kayla asked Andy Staples about the Vanderbilt/Texas matchup and asked if Vanderbilt would be able to sustain this success moving forward. I was expecting a full on discussion and Andy basically said "No, this is all because of Diego Pavia. He is a dog and they are winning because of him." While I was disappointed in the lazy answer and quick "discussion", I have been worried about this as well. I know Diego's successor wishlists have been discussed on the board, but if we don't find someone very similar, do we go back to what we are used to? Or do we gain enough steam in recruites, NIL, Transfer Portal and just buzz, that we CAN sustain it and stack good seasons together?
