Given that Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason came to Nashville as a highly prized defensive coordinator and is now the Commodores' defensive coordinator himself, it's no surprise Vanderbilt's defense was ahead of its offense in the Black-Gold spring game Saturday. In fact, it might have been alarming if it wasn't.

But how far ahead is too far ahead? Mason will no doubt wonder that himself after the Commodores' Black squad -- i.e., its defense -- got much the better of the Gold, "winning" the scrimmage 38-24. But far more enlightening than that scoreline (derived from the now-standard "modified scoring system") may be the combined statistics for the four Commodore quarterbacks: 19-of-41 for 189 yards (4.6 per-attempt), zero touchdowns, five interceptions.

Still: this is an offense that ranked a putrid 119th a year ago in yards per-play, that just wrapped up its spring practice by failing to put together a touchdown drive longer than two yards in its spring game. After 2014, skepticism is in order where the Commodore offense is concerned, and the numbers above won't do much -- if anything -- to alleviate it.
