Aaron Fitt of d1baseball was on hand for last night's game and had a lot of positive things to say about Vandy.
I am also very impressed with our freshmen class and expect to get a lot of production out of them this year. I'll go out on a limb and say that during their 3 years here they will help bring home at least one national championship.
Black won last night in another close game 5-4 to take the series 3-1.
Best things about the series in my view:
1. 13 of our 17 hitters had 3/4 hits.
2. There were very few errors.
3. Gonzalez 2 home runs. (although he did strike out 4 times last night)
4. Pitching of Jackson Gillis (ERA 1.17, 15 K in 7.2 IP)
5. Pitching of Paxton Stover (ERA 0.00, 1 H, 8 K, 5 IP)
Disappointing things about the series:
1. Didn't get to see Raby or Fellows pitch.
2. Alonzo Jones was 0-15
3. Freshmen pitchers as a group walked a lot of batters.
In terms of what happens in February, competition is still wide open for 3B, LF, CF, RF, and C. Best of all, we have several good choices for each position.
It's hard to tell much in terms of pitching but Jackson Gillis was very impressive, as was Paxton Stover. Other than Raby I couldn't tell you who the 4 main starting pitchers will be other than to say there's quite a few good candidates.
I think 2018 is going to be a very good season. We should at least host a regional.
